Eddie Germiquet spent his early years in Mozambique, where his parents were missionaries, and grew up speaking Tsonga with local children and French at home. Later, in South Africa, he learned English and Afrikaans, followed by Latin and Greek, giving him a lifelong fascination with languages and their origins – a foundation that has proved invaluable in deciphering scientific names. After forty years serving Presbyterian congregations across South Africa, while also completing his honours, master’s and PhD, Eddie applied his research skills to write South African Bird Names – Origins and Meanings, exploring the fascinating stories behind the names of the region’s birds.
