An imprint of Penguin Random House, Struik Nature is Africa’s leading natural history publisher. The imprint is seeking a dynamic and highly creative individual to join its team of specialist editors and designers to produce fully illustrated books that cover a wide range of nature subjects. Penguin Random House is an industry-leading trade book publisher and offers market-related cost-to-company packages and a flexible, progressive environment that aims to support those who are seeking a challenge.

Keyresponsibilities

  • Conceptualise layout designs across a variety of nature subjects.
  • Design complete books and covers, taking them through from edited manuscript to print, within budget and to deadline.
  • Create structured stylesheets and master pages for each book project in InDesign.
  • Evaluate illustrative material, including digital photographs, transparencies, illustrations and maps.
  • Brief and liaise with illustrators and cartographers.
  • Review and mark up colour proofs, indicating necessary colour adjustments.
  • Prepare documents and instructions for repro agencies.
  • Develop and maintain excellent relationships with authors, photographers and illustrators.

Skills & Knowledge required 

  • A graphic design degree or diploma or related DTP courses.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in book or magazine design.
  • Good knowledge of InDesign and literacy in Apple Mac.
  • Proficiency in Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Strong typographic skills.
  • A sound knowledge of the reproduction and printing processes.
  • Good project management skills.
  • The ability to work on more than one project at a time and within a team.
